About the Yona of the Dawn Anime
Known as Akatsuki no Yona in Japanese, Yona of the Dawn is based on a popular manga series written and illustrated by Mizuho Kusanagi. It’s a well-loved romance anime with fantasy elements, so it’s no surprise that fans are eagerly awaiting a second season.
The story follows Yona, a princess and the sole heir of the Kouka Kingdom. After the tragic murder of her father, and the betrayal of her cousin Su-won, Yona’s life changes forever.
How Many Seasons of Yona of the Dawn Are There?
Currently, Yona of the Dawn only has one season and three OVA episodes. However, the OVAs don’t act as direct continuations of the first season, as they adapt content from later volumes of the manga.
The first season, consisting of 24 episodes, premiered in October 2014, and since then, the series has built a loyal fanbase that’s been hoping for a second season.

Yona of the Dawn Season 2: Manga
The anime is based on the Yona of the Dawn manga. As of January 2022, the manga has 37 volumes, with more expected. The series is ongoing, and the author, Mizuho Kusanagi, continues to release new content.
If you want to pick up the story where the anime left off, the manga’s Volume 9 is the place to start. The first season adapted volumes 1 through 8, while the OVAs covered content from Volume 18. There’s enough material for at least three more seasons, so the possibility for future adaptations exists.
Profitability and Sales of Yona of the Dawn
Looking at sales figures is important in determining the potential for a second season. The Blu-ray sales of Yona of the Dawn were around 2,800 copies per disc, which wasn’t particularly high for 2014. Manga sales, however, remain strong. For instance, Volume 36 sold around 150,000 copies, while Volume 37 sold nearly 100,000 in its first week.
Despite its popularity, the series didn’t produce much merchandise, with no figurines and only around 350 merchandise items. This lower profitability may be one of the reasons why a second season hasn’t been green-lit.
