My Mate is a Feline Gentleman: Volume 2 Review – UK Arc Over

I believed I was prepared, but I was mistaken. I didn’t grasp the full reality of being a diplomat’s partner—or someone destined to become an ambassador. (Toushirou’s thoughts)

In this alternate omegaverse where Nyartigian (cat people) coexist with humans, Toushirou, a Japanese omega, finds his fated alpha mate, Alex, a diplomat. However, their happiness fades when Alex receives a special assignment in the UK. Toushirou eagerly anticipates traveling with Alex to London, but complications emerge when Alex’s estranged father, Gilbert, orchestrates the invitation.

Tension Arises in London

Upon their arrival, Toushirou faces restrictions. He is no longer allowed to serve as Alex’s valet and is excluded from social activities, including a dinner where Gilbert introduces Alex to a marriageable Nyartigian woman. Gilbert demands that Alex end his relationship with Toushirou—speaking in English to conceal the conversation.

Meanwhile, Toushirou is confined to his room but meets Jack, a half-Japanese servant sent to care for him. Jack’s friendly demeanor and fluency in Japanese comfort Toushirou. This unexpected friendship surprises and unsettles Alex. But could Jack be part of Gilbert’s plan?

Isolation and Unease Grow

Alex’s secret diplomatic mission leaves him little time to check on Toushirou. It’s only when Alex’s mother, Shelley, invites Toushirou to help prepare traditional treats in the kitchen that the truth about his confinement surfaces. Omegas, and alphas by extension, are taboo in Europe. If Toushirou’s identity is discovered, he risks being sent to a protective facility.

Lonely and confined, Toushirou relies on Jack for support. But can he trust Jack, or is there another hidden agenda? What exactly is Alex’s secret mission?

A Complicated London Experience

Although the cover art depicts iconic London landmarks like the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben, Toushirou never gets to explore the city. By the end of Chapter 4 (Chapter 5 flashes back to Japan), his situation looks more desperate than ever. Arata Asanae’s alternate history omegaverse provides an interesting lens, drawing comparisons between Nyartig and non-European nations in the late 19th century.

In this world, Toushirou is still viewed as a possession rather than a person—echoing his treatment in Japan before meeting Alex. While it would be satisfying to see Toushirou assert more agency, Arata Asanae’s visually attractive art and storytelling keep readers engaged. The plot earns its M Mature rating due to consensual romantic scenes and discussions of male pregnancy.

Bonus Story

The bonus story features Rodney, Alex’s Nyartigian aide. Rodney intervenes in what he believes is an attack, only to discover the man being “rescued” is Asai, Toushirou’s half-brother and owner of Asai Mercantile. This encounter might mark the start of a new friendship.

Production Quality and Translation

The translation by Leighann Harvey for Yen Press is once again reliable, with lettering by K.T.B. The edition itself is visually appealing, with subtle color on the cover and an interior color illustration. The two-page short story On the Ship from Japan to the UK, originally placed under the dust jacket, is now included inside the cover.

Looking Ahead: Volume 3

April 2024 will see the release of Volume 3 of My Mate is a Feline Gentleman: UK Arc Under, with one more volume to follow. Volume 2 transitions the story, setting up conflicts that the upcoming volumes will likely resolve.
